Have We Stopped Him?

Autumn has definitely arrived now and it's getting very chilly here now in south east England - bright and sunny though, so a lovely day.  It takes so much longer to get dressed now though with more layers and we have had the heating on for 2 evenings now so it must be cold – I am not saying we are tight or anything BUT we don't put the heating on until we have to!!!

-~-o~~0~~o-~-

I am having to reorganise my days now too if I want to take any photos of the jewellery, as it is getting dark so much earlier and even then there is a definite lack of brightness some days.  I should really have the photos ready a few days in advance so that I can schedule photography sessions for the brighter days.  I find it is still very awkward though as I can only take the photos on the bathroom windowsill, as you know, but the sun is so low in the sky now that it shines too much on the gemstones even when it is a bright day and the sun has moved round from the window so that I can take the photos.  It wont be long before we move the clocks out of British Summer Time either and then it will be even worse.

-~-o~~0~~o-~-

I did a 3-card tarot reading for myself the other day about whether I would get back dancing soon but the outcome wasn’t very good which is a bit frustrating as I really want to get back to doing what I love.  Not only do I want to do it but I NEED to do it as I need to get some exercise.  I have already noticed my coffee intake has gone up just because it is cold and I don’t like black coffee so coffee is more calories than water for me.

For those who are in my circles on Google+ you will know that we have had a mouse problem.  We thought we may have heard some scratchy noises a few days before but with two cats in the house and one who does like to use the carpets to sharpen his claws, we hadn’t thought too much of it as we thought it must be the cat making the noise.  But a couple of nights ago when we were watching television both of the dogs and both of the cats were in the lounge with us when we could hear these scratching noises above the lounge ceiling.  Now as we both believe in spirit activity we wondered if it was that at first but it went on too long and moved across the ceiling so we had the horrible suspicion that something had got in under the bedroom floorboards.  With fitted wardrobes it was not going to be easy to access under the floorboards but after an inspection of the nice neat garage (hmmph I am kidding – it is choc a block mayhem in there and very full – LOL, room for a toy car maybe) droppings were discovered just to prove we had an unwanted visitor or two (or more!).  Ray discovered that one of the heating pipes had come loose from its clip (the boiler is in the garage) so the gap for a mouse to go up into the house was larger than it need be.  He put the pipe back into its holder and we had to hope the mouse was not under the floorboards at the time or we would have a different problem in that it couldn’t then get out (if that was indeed the way he had got in – but as there were mouse droppings under the hole we presumed that was his illegal point of entry).  I certainly didn’t want the stench of a rotting mouse under the floorboards of our bedroom and over the lounge!  But last night we didn’t hear any noises so with a bit of luck we have blocked his route in – now all we have to do is get him to willingly leave the garage and move on to pastures new.  We have fields behind us but between us and the fields is a stable so he probably came from over there and sneaked in when our cat was out of the way (only the one cat would catch it – the other one wouldn’t have a clue – inbreeding I think as he is a pedigree!!).  The stupid thing is that we have a whole box of mousetraps that the previous owners had left (should have read something into that!!!) but they have slipped unnoticed into the piles of stuff in the garage never to be seen again (or certainly not when we want them!).  Ray always says he knows where everything is in his garage (certainly not mine or it would be more organised!) but of course when we want something he can’t find it!!!  As it is his domain it doesn’t usually bother me but it just irks me now and again when we want something and he doesn’t know where it is.  You wouldn’t believe me if I told you that we are / were turning the garage into a room – well we were when we moved in but a few years down the line the garage has got fuller and fuller!!!  Hopefully if there are no noises tonight we will have at least stopped the little perisher from getting into the house.

-~-o~~0~~o-~-

Now what I want to know is how come when I post something on Google+ or Facebook I get about 3 comments if I am lucky yet if someone else puts anything they get about 100 comments.  Recently I posted something funny and got 4 comments and then I saw it again when someone else posted it the next day and he got over 100 comments.    I would love to know what I am doing wrong J

And here is todays chuckle:

Four Catholic ladies are having coffee together.

The first one tells her friends,
"My son is a priest. When he walks into a room, everyone calls him 'Father'.

The second Catholic woman chirps,
"My son is a bishop. Whenever he walks into a room, people say, 'Your Grace'."

The third Catholic woman says smugly,
"My son is a cardinal. Whenever he walks into a room, people say, 'Your Eminence'."

The fourth Catholic woman sips her coffee in silence.

The first three women give her this subtle "Well...?"
She replies, "My son is a gorgeous, 6'2", hard-bodied stripper... Whenever he walks into a room, people say, 'Oh my God...'."

Are Holidays The Restful Break They Are Meant To Be?

Holidays used to be a pleasure, something to look forward to and a restful break from work.  Thirty or forty years or ago more people only ever had two weeks holiday a year plus Bank Holidays and often the company they worked for closed for a set period of two weeks so there was no choice about when to go on holiday.  This tended to be before overseas holidays took off and everyone just went to the seaside in England – for two weeks if they could afford it or for a day trip if not.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Gradually people were given more holiday days the longer they had been working at the same company and companies stopped closing down completely for two weeks but had flexible holidays dates that could be staggered among the employees.  People started going on more than one holiday a year as they could split their holiday allowance and air travel became more popular so people started to travel further afield for their well earned break.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

But nowadays I hear more and more people complaining about so many things that were not right about their holidays and it seems it is now more relaxing to get back to work and normality after the tense break rather than actually enjoying the holiday itself.  The main problems appear to be in the actual travelling to the holiday destination or back.  Flight delays are the most common problem but bad hotel rooms, terrible food and awful resorts come high on the list too, before you even get to the basic but less common problems like being ill, having something stolen etc.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Whenever I ask someone lately if they had a good holiday I have to prepare for them to tell me all the bad things that happened to them with regards to their well-earned break.  I very rarely find that everything went smoothly, lovely flights that were on time, a great resort, comfortable room, delicious food and brilliant weather.  They never seem to say they had a lovely relaxing holiday but usually say how pleased they are to be back but it is a shame they have to go back to work as they feel they need a rest from all the stress of the holiday.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Whatever happened along the way over the years???  I am sure people enjoyed just the two weeks break so much more in the last half of the century compared to all the holiday time people have now.

And while we are on an age related topic here’s todays chuckle:

As we Silver Surfers know, sometimes we have trouble with our computers.

I had a problem yesterday, so I called Eric, the 11 year old next door, whose bedroom looks like Mission Control and asked him to come over.
Eric clicked a couple of buttons and solved the problem.
As he was walking away, I called after him, 'So, what was wrong?
He replied, 'It was an ID ten T error.'
I didn't want to appear stupid, but nonetheless inquired,
'An, ID ten T error? What's that? In case I need to fix it again.'
Eric grinned.... 'Haven't you ever heard of an ID ten T error before?
'No,' I replied.
'Write it down,' he said, 'and I think you'll figure it out.'
So I wrote down:

ID10T

I used to like Eric

Why Do I Do It?

I love helping people but often get taken advantage of so I should learn how to just give enough…and no more.

I often get asked about things by people as for some reason they always seem to think I will be able to help.  Well, I do my best.  But I know I always get carried away and they will expect me to do it for them in the end.  They just say they will leave it to me as I know all about it and they don’t.  Someone will ask me about how to do something on the computer or the internet and so I start to tell them but they can’t work it out, so my hand is itching to get to the mouse or the keyboard.  Do you know that feeling – it is sort of “ooh let me get at it”, a bit like a backseat driver in a way I suppose.  In the end I say I will show them and they willingly leap out of the chair to change places with me.  Now this is perfectly fine if I am just sorting out a problem for them – and believe me I am absolutely no expert but I suppose compared to them I probably am – but if they are wanting to know how to do something that they will probably want to do again I always make sure that I show them first but then get them to do it as well a couple of times so that they should know for next time.  I have even been known to send them instructions (every single keystroke type instructions) if they get stuck again so they can save them for next time they need to do whatever it was they were having problems with, as otherwise they keep asking me to do the same thing over and over again because they can’t be bothered to do it themselves or feel it is too complicated for them to manage.

I should have learnt by now as my mum was so dependent on me for everything from writing her cheques to choosing her curtains. She couldn’t do anything without either consulting me but mainly without me doing it for her.   My dad used to do everything when he was alive as she could never do anything or make decisions.  After he passed it was down to me to fill in his shoes and take over for her as she had no intention of ever doing anything herself.

I find people asking me about all sorts of other things and then wanting me to do it for them.  My husband has taken to asking me about looking for something or ordering something so we have discussed the best place etc. to get it from but I have realised that he then expects me to have ordered it whereas, as far as I knew, he was just consulting me and was going to order it himself.  If he or the kids want something they know I will go the full mile and search everywhere for the best item at the best price.

Sometimes though, it is just better if I don’t get too involved because I just waste too much time on it.  My daughter was away on holiday abroad recently and emailed me to see if I could look on the internet for a particular type of shop somewhere near where they were staying.  Well about 2 hours later I had finally run out of resources and emailed her all my findings.  When they came home I asked which one she had finally gone to and she just said they hadn’t gone to any of them in the end but thanks for looking for her!

I have even been known to help people I hardly know with things that I should have just told them how to do without trying to help so much.  Some appreciate it which is great and some don’t – but I just like helping people – it is just my nature.  The only problem I find is that sometimes I have been so busy helping other people more than is absolutely necessary that I have no time left in the day to do the things I really need to do myself.

What I need to learn is to give the basic help someone needs without getting too involved.  If they ask me a question about something I should just give them the answer or explain it to them without going out of my way to look things up online for them or to find a different source for them.  If they can’t be bothered to follow that route then I shouldn’t be silly enough to use my time doing it for them either if they are capable of doing it themselves.  I can just feel pleased that I have helped them at all – and I do, I get a kick out of helping peopleJ

Todays trivia:

How come you never hear father-in-law jokes?

Todays chuckle:

An elderly man is stopped by the police around 2 a.m. and is asked where he is going at this time of night.

The man replies, "I am on my way to a lecture about alcohol abuse and the effects it has on the human body, as well as smoking and staying out late."

The officer then asks, "Really? Who is giving that lecture at this time of night?"

The man replies, "That would be my wife."

How Tidy Are You?

Are you a really tidy person or is your house or desk quite “busy”?  I have never been minimalistic and have always been a bit of a collector but recently I seem to have collected rather more than usual as I said yesterday and my normal “everything has its place” house has rather become a “put it where there is space” house.

-------o)(o-OOO-o)(o-------

I may have let things lapse recently – I have no idea why unless it is a case of “if you can’t beat them, join them”.  I used to be so tidy, keep everything in its cupboard etc. so had very little laying around.  I used to keep the kitchen debris-free and never left dishes or cups in the sink or on the worktops – as they were finished with they went straight into the dishwasher – well now if I bring a mug downstairs it goes into the sink rather than the dishwasher as it will get put in there later anyway.  Mind you that particular quirk might be to do with the fact that the handle on the front of the matching panel on the built-in dishwasher snapped and we had a real job to get any more (you know how these things happen – no-one ever stocks spares!!) and so now we open it very carefully with the new handle so I guess we now don’t open it for single items but wait until there are more to go in just to save on pulling the handle too often.

-------o)(o-OOO-o)(o-------

I suppose I have a very slight OCD tendency as well (or did have more than now) because everything has to be positioned “just so” – ornaments etc. have to be in a particular position on an exact spot and I “just have to” straighten pictures etc. (in fact it is all I can do not to straighten pictures when I am round other peoples houses too!).  Our doorbell is only held on by a screw at the top with nothing to hold it in place at the bottom and every time I go out I end up straightening it as no-one seems to be able to just push the button without moving it sideways for some reason.  I am sure they all know to move it just to wind me up J  Every time we go out Ray sneakily moves it a bit when I am not looking to see if I notice and move it back – he always takes the p… out of me about it.  I suppose nowadays though it is the little things like that which bother me more than the bigger things as I have just become acclimatised to his mess and can’t be bothered to worry about it any more.  Every now and again his papers in the kitchen seem to take over the breakfast bar or his “stuff to go out to the garage” takes over the utility room and I think enough is enough and ask him to sort them out.  But as long as my bears seem to keep breeding upstairs I suppose I feel I haven’t got a leg to stand on, so as long as it looks neat and tidy where visitors are likely to be then that is ok by me these days.

-------o)(o-OOO-o)(o-------

The only trouble is when you start tidying a room, like I have been this week, you find all sorts of things that you had forgotten to do or to finish, especially in the office.  You unearth piles of filing, papers waiting to be shredded, papers you put “handy” as they needed to be dealt with etc. and then as you move them, rather than sort them, you just end up with piles of stuff everywhere with nowhere to put them now that you have cleared the desk and realise you should have definitely sorted them all out BEFORE clearing the desk as at least then you knew which piles were which.  It was all in certain remembered places on the desk, maybe not very tidy, but in your head you knew where everything was but now you run the risk of never find anything ever again.  I haven’t even finished yet (it will take at least 3 more days at this rate!) and I have already found that things I need are nowhere to be found.  Some of the things have never had a place to live permanently so need to find a home and others just can’t fit in where they are meant to live because the space is already choc full to the brim.  I need to file about 6 months worth of bills but the filing cabinet is already full and it is painful to even try to get things out yet alone trying to add some more papers to the already tightly full files, so before I can file them away I need to do some weeding out and of course that takes even more time so it gets put off, and off, and off.  On the plus side you turn up things that have been “lost” for a while.  So at this moment in time I have a clearish desk but boxes of stuff behind me that somehow used to sit on my desk once as well as the bears!!!  Oh well, another day tomorrow…

And here is todays chuckle:

'OLD' IS WHEN....

Your sweetie says, 'Let's go upstairs and make love,' and you answer, 'Pick one; I can't do both!'

Your friends compliment you on your new alligator shoes and you're barefoot.

A sexy babe or hunk catches your fancy and your pacemaker opens the garage door.

Going braless pulls all the wrinkles out of your face.

You don't care where your spouse goes, just as long as you don't have to go along.

You are cautioned to slow down by the doctor instead of  by the police

'Getting a little action' means you don't need to take any fibre today.

'Getting lucky' means you find your car in the parking lot.

An 'all nighter' means not getting up to use the bathroom.

Help - I've Been Taken Over !!!

How did it happen?  I have gradually been taken over by all my collections, especially my bears - I am sure they are breeding!  If you are a collector like me somehow you just don’t notice it happening until you either need to move house or change a room around (which is what happened to me) and then you suddenly realise just how much stuff you have accumulated over the years.  A sneaky clue is that when another bear comes to stay I have to try to find a home for him as the space is already limited.  But after a while you get so used to finding gaps to squeeze them in, or bigger bear laps to sit them on, that you don’t notice too much.  But suddenly you do something in the house that changes things and it suddenly hits you as to just how they have crept into and filled all the available crevices that are usable.   All my books in the bookshelves are now hidden as bears sit in front of them, all my tarot decks are now also out of sight behind the bears on the shelves.  My desk was covered with them as I liked to keep all my favourite bears within view (and as I am always on the computer that is the best place for them to be on view).  The big bears stand on the floor beside chairs etc. so after a while you realise that even the walking space is getting smaller.

-~-o~~0~~o-~-

I had a serious case of “what the heck am I doing” yesterday when trying to sort the office to make workspace for making the jewellery, rather than using the dining room table.  I have an L-shaped desk (the side bit is what the call a “return” as it is only narrow and not full desk size so that is where the computer used to live – on the narrow bit.  But I cleared everything off the desk so that I could move the computer away from the window where the sun kept shining direct in my eyes to the wide desk and I filled 4 boxes with bears.  Now they seem to take up more space in the temporary boxes for the interim period between homes than they ever did on the desk.  But I need to find space for these “best bears” where I can still see them and I have no idea how to do that.  It made me look at the rest of the office, the rest of upstairs and then the rest of the house with a totally different pair of eyes.  Downstairs is not minimalistic but more normal and not cluttered even though there are crystals and a few bears scattered around.  Upstairs is another matter as it is “bear territory”.  They are in all the rooms except the bathroom - on bookcases and in glass cabinets, on the chest of drawers and on a chair.   My crystal used to be quite ornamental in the front of the bookcases etc. but now they are just dotted among the bears.

-~-o~~0~~o-~-

I realised all my collections have definitely taken over!!!  The crystals I love and they are not problem as they are decorative and fill the house with positive energy and the huge amount of tarot decks I have are not really a problem either as they are individually quite small although I do have whole bookcases full of them but really it is the bears that have taken over and I am sure they are breeding like rabbits because I am sure I have not bought that many over the years, have I???  I have had to have a total ban on even looking at them online so that what I don’t see I wont miss.  I can’t be disappointed about something that I didn’t even know existed.  But if I do see one I like it is just too tempting.  I definitely need to cull the population outburst in my house and cut them down to a more “shelfable” amount.

-~-o~~0~~o-~-

We also have shelves and whirly things full of cd’s -  I really should get round to putting them all on computer or an ipod (not that I have one of those though) so that we can get rid of the space-taking cd’s.  Come to that I still have a big box full of record albums (and some singles) in the loft as they went up there when we moved in and have just stayed there.  We don’t even own a record player so they are of no use to me and I am sure the cd equivalent would probably sound better anyway nowadays.  I should put them on ebay but never seem to have the time and would need to buy cardboard sleeves to post them in which would probably cost more than I would get for the albums – although they are in mint condition as I used to really look after my albums which are all in the original white paper covers within the main cover and then in a plastic cover as well.  Even the Singles are in their original covers although I have written the name of the song and the band/singer on each cover.

And here’s today joke:

0 to 200 in 6 seconds

Bob was in trouble. He had forgotten his wedding anniversary. His wife was really annoyed.

She told him "Tomorrow morning, I expect to find a gift in the driveway that goes from 0 to 200 in 6 seconds AND IT HAD BETTER BE THERE!!"

The next morning he got up early and left for work. When his wife woke up, she looked out the window and sure enough there was a box gift-wrapped in the middle of the driveway.

Confused, the wife put on her robe and ran out to the driveway.  She brought the box back into the house.

She opened it and found a brand new bathroom scale.

Bob has been missing since Friday.

I CAN Live Without Seeing EVERYTHING Posted in my Circles on G+

As I have been trying to move things around in my office / craft room I have been rather busier than normal and realised I didn’t do a blog yesterday or the day before so thought I needed to catch up with everyone today.  I find there is so much good content from the people in my circles on Google+ that it takes me ages to look through the stream which takes up my time when I haven’t been on there for a few hours, especially in the mornings because I obviously go to bed before a lot of my friends in my circles who live in the US.  So when I get online at lunchtime I have an awful lot to catch up on and, as I have said before, I think I must have a FOMO complex (Fear Of Missing Out) because I don’t want to miss out on some of the really interesting posts.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I can NEVER catch up on all the tweets in Twitter which I do find frustrating but as most of the non-direct tweets are promotions I don’t mind too much, but the posts on Google+ are much more interesting.  Facebook posts seem to be much easier to keep up with, possibly due to the shorter posts on there but also people don’t seem to put the same interesting things to read on there that they do on Google+.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I had a great day yesterday as, apart from still trying to sort the room out, I had 2 friends come round – one in the afternoon and one in the evening – neither of whom I have seen for quite a while.  It’s funny but I just knew they would end up coming round on the same day and yet one was an unplanned visitJ  They are both very dear friends and it was lovely to see them and it made a lovely change to my normal routine to be socialising for most of the day.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

BUT I realised today that I am not really pining that I didn’t see all the new posts in my circles yesterday – I actually discovered that life can go on without me seeing everything on Google+ if there are other things to do.  I did find it was actually possible to just check out my “favourite” or “more important” circles without having to see absolutely everything that everyone had posted.  Normally I “make time” to see all the posts, or as many as I can as skimming down the stream sometimes manages to miss posts, and sometimes I am just so late to bed trying to catch up on them all as the stream is so very busy at that time of night as it is evening in the US.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

So it ended up being a day off work and only a short time to look at the posts online.   And I survived without my “see everything” G+ fix.  If I can manage it, the consequence of this is that I shall try to limit my periods on the computer to “sessions”.  I will try to discipline myself to not looking at my stream until I have posted my jewellery item of the day and my blog.  Then I shall try to keep to certain blocks of timed sessions so that I can still fit other things into my day and not allow myself a lingering session on there until late evening.  I am not sure I will be able to keep to it, and keeping offline while I am doing other things will be ok, but dragging myself away when I do go on there will be another story!!!  Watch this space…

Ooh - The Possible Consequences of the Facebook Timeline

Can you think of all the things you have ever regretted doing or saying?  Aren't you relieved that your new girlfriend / boyfriend or your current / future boss doesn't know about them?  Think of all the comments and photos you have ever put on Facebook and if you would actually want them on there for all to see for evermore in the Timeline.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Once upon a time arguments and slanging matches were private affairs face to face, then came phone quarrels, followed by emails and texting where there was written evidence of what was said and now we have Facebook and Google+ with written and sometimes picture evidence of what was said and done.  So arguments can now get totally out of proportion to the shouted arguments of years ago.  No more kissing or shaking hands and making up.  Now there are glaring details of the argument on the internet, often for all to see.  Now the Facebook timeline add a whole new dimension to this.

 *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

There must be so many people caught out already by the things put on Facebook.  That night out when they were so drunk that they let did something stupid and a so-called friend took a photo and put it on Facebook, which then ruined an otherwise healthy relationship between not only the couple but also the two friends.  That photo of mates out enjoying themselves and one realises that he had told his partner that he was only going to the gym / visit his mum.  The times someone is tagged in the background of someone else’s photo doing something they would not be doing if they had realised they were in the photo.

Facebook has already created a whole new generation of people who share simply EVERYTHING and not think anything of it - never feel embarrassed, never feel guilty about what they have said or shown so openly.  But before Timeline at least they were all washed away in the Newsfeed.  Now they will remain available for everyone to see after the event for years to come.  Like having a tattoo and wishing you never had.  Would you want your future job prospects to be ruined by some stupid things you not only did when you were young but you stupidly put them on Facebook for all your mates to see?

Is all this openness good for todays youth or will it be their downfall?  If they are used to blazenly displaying such openness to everyone around them and for all to see, how will they survive in the big wide world further down the line.  Will they still blurt out online all their hatred for their boss or work colleagues when something goes wrong without giving it a second thought, as they are so used to doing it?  Those things used to be said in private, away from the boss or colleague, but now they may be there not only for the boss / colleague to see, but all the other people the person would know as well.  At the moment they may stand a chance in that their boss or colleague just may not be on Facebook themselves but in a few years time there is little chance that the boss or colleague will not see it either directly or be told about it and can then see for themselves.  Companies used to just get references for prospective employees but I can see now they will look them up on Facebook too as it will probably be more revealing as to whether they are suitable for the position.

Here is today snippet of trivia:
